The Denver International Airport has issued a warning regarding a new Facebook page, named D?nv?r Air??rt, claiming to sell lost luggage for $10. The airport asserts that the page is “in no way affiliated” with them.
Presenting itself as a thrift and consignment store, the Facebook page is appearing as a sponsored advertisement on users’ feeds. In its sole post, published on Wednesday around 7 a.m., the business promotes the sale of suitcases with baggage for $9.95, alleging that the luggage has been in storage at DIA for over six months.
An airport spokesperson emphasized on Thursday morning that the mentioned Facebook account has no affiliation with DEN. They advised individuals to contact the respective airlines to understand baggage policies regarding storage duration, noting that such decisions are made by the airlines, not the airport.
On the D?nv?r Air??rt Facebook post, a user named Dale Collins inquired about the legitimacy, prompting other users to share photos of allegedly received suitcases from the business.
A user named Lucas Hamm, detailing the process, mentioned following a link, answering questions, guessing a box correctly, filling a short form, and paying $10. Despite the page being newly created, it garnered over 1,100 reviews, resulting in an almost five-star rating, contrasting with its minimal page likes at seven.
Efforts to reach the Denver Airport business via email were unsuccessful, and the associated phone number led to an unrelated health insurance line, indicating potential fraudulent activity.
Similar scams targeting airlines have been reported, with TikTok videos highlighting phishing attempts related to Singapore Airlines. The Federal Trade Commission disclosed $2.7 billion in fraud losses through social media from January 2021 to June 2023, with the most common reported origin of scams being Facebook and Instagram advertisements. The prevalent type of fraud involved individuals attempting to purchase items promoted on social media, often resulting in undelivered goods.
